We've taken this Isotherm 934 along on several camping and beach weekends: it's the kind of cooler you quickly forget about, in a good way. It does its job without surprises, the insulation holds up over a full day with one or two Freez'Packs, and the handle that locks the lid shut when closed avoids nasty surprises during car transport. The real strong point is its shell, rated to support 250 kg: it literally doubles as a stool by the water's edge, a detail that matters when you're short on chairs. At 17 litres, it stays modest for more than two people over several days, and its insulation remains average for the passive segment compared with more premium references. But for the price, it's hard to find anything simpler or sturdier: exactly what you'd expect from an entry-level Campingaz cooler.

I took this FrostVault out on three trips, including a weekend of fishing and a festival under full sun, packed the night before with ordinary bagged ice. The rotomoulded build inspires confidence straight away: thick walls, a lid that snaps shut cleanly on the premium latch system, and moulded handles that don't dig into your hand even when it's full. The real standout is the Dry Zone drawer: keeping cheese, cold cuts or fruit in there without ever dunking them in melted ice genuinely changes how you use a cooler day to day, no more wrapping everything in plastic bags. After a little over four days in the shade and then full sun in the afternoons, there was still unmelted ice left, a solid result even if it fell just short of the claimed 5 days in real-world heat. The lockable lid is a nice touch for strapping it down in the boot without worrying it will pop open. The one downside: at 9.2kg empty, it's not the lightest in its class once loaded, and the price sits at the upper end for a non-premium passive cooler. For anyone who genuinely wants to keep dry food and cold drinks apart without the hassle, this is one of the most complete solutions on the market right now.

Brought along on a road trip to northern Europe, this Dometic BordBar AS 25 first ran off the van's cigarette lighter socket through the long stretches, before switching automatically to mains power once plugged in at a serviced stopover. The seatbelt mount on the passenger seat proved genuinely useful through mountain bends, the unit never budged. It kept already-cold drinks and food from a campsite fridge nicely chilled, but never turned a warm can into an ice-cold one, a familiar limitation of Peltier technology I already knew about. On mains power, noise stays discreet, almost unnoticeable once the door is shut; on the cigarette lighter, though, the hum becomes noticeably more present, especially with the engine off. The small 10.5-litre internal freezer compartment proved handy for keeping ice packs ready in reserve. For short to medium trips, used alongside a proper compressor cooler, it remains an honest choice, provided you check the price at the time of purchase: the going rate has climbed noticeably lately against comparable competitors.

The Engel MR-040F is a 40-litre fridge-freezer cooler with a swing compressor, powered by 12V, 24V or 230V. Continuously adjustable from +10°C to -18°C, it consumes very little power (about 32 W) thanks to its patented compressor, immune to vibration and tilting. All-ABS housing resistant to corrosion, external digital thermometer included, virtually no maintenance required. A safe bet for a van, boat or motorhome, at the cost of a heavier build (about 22 kg) and a higher price.
I took it along for a three-week van trip up to the Arctic Circle, from scorching stops in the south to barely a few degrees on the Norwegian highlands. The Engel swing compressor didn't miss a beat, even wedged at an angle on a shelf in the boot during the roughest tracks near the North Cape. The external digital thermometer turned out to be genuinely useful day to day: no more lifting the lid twenty times to check whether yesterday's catch was still holding temperature. What struck me most was its versatility: switching from fridge mode (+10°C) to freezer mode (-18°C) in a few minutes let me freeze ice packs overnight to get through the next day without power. Two honest downsides: at 22 kg empty, this isn't a cooler you want to load and unload at every stop, it's better installed once and left in the van. And the price, well above an absorption or thermoelectric cooler, only makes sense if you're planning to use it for several seasons: after this trip, mine hadn't aged a day.

I tried it at a van meet-up with friends, in the middle of August, arriving on site late afternoon with the thermometer past 30°C. The VMSO 3.5 compressor brought the temperature down impressively in under an hour, enough to have evening drinks properly chilled before we had even finished setting up camp. The built-in ice maker was a hit at drinks time, handy not to have to deal with a separate ice tray for the whole stay. The vacuum insulation is noticeable to the touch: the outer walls stay cool while the footprint remains compact for 55 usable litres. The 18W USB-C port even came in handy for charging my phone in the evening. Two drawbacks: the ice maker eats into usable space at the top, and the price is clearly above a compressor cooler without connectivity of similar capacity. For regular van use, it remains one of the most accomplished coolers I have tried.

I took it on a classic camping weekend, with no bigger ambition than keeping drinks and food cool from Friday evening to Sunday. No app, no Bluetooth to set up: I just placed the cooler, turned the dial and did not think about it again, a genuine comfort when you want simplicity after a busy week. The interior LED light turned out far more useful than expected for finding a yoghurt at the bottom of the box in the middle of the night without switching on a head torch. At 11.5 kg empty, I carried it alone without any trouble from the boot to the picnic table. The one real downside is the cooling range, limited to -10°C: fine for keeping things cool, but I had to give up on storing properly hard ice cubes for Saturday evening drinks, the ice softened during the day. For everyday use in a van or car, with no need for freezing, the FR40 remains a simple, effective choice.
