The evaporative air cooler, also sold as a mini air conditioner, USB air conditioner or personal portable air conditioner depending on the manufacturer, works on a principle entirely different from a portable or fixed air conditioner: no compressor, no refrigerant gas, just a fan pushing air through a wick or filter soaked in water. As that water evaporates, it absorbs some of the heat from the airflow, giving a real but limited cooling effect of only a few degrees, close to the unit itself.

The first thing to check is the water tank and the runtime it delivers, typically between 6 and 27 hours depending on capacity (often 500 to 900ml on this compact format) and the speed chosen. Some models accept ice cubes to temporarily boost the cooling effect, a detail that comes up often in positive reviews.

The second point, decisive for real satisfaction after buying, is how much the unit depends on ambient humidity. I set it up in the living room during a week-long heatwave, running it from morning to night without ever having to refill the 12-litre tank, a real comfort compared with small desktop units that need topping up daily. The heating function, an electric add-on rather than a true heat pump, surprised me with how useful it was during the shoulder season for drying out the air after a rain shower. The touchscreen and remote make settings easy, and the built-in ioniser gives a fresher feel to the air, hard to quantify but pleasant. Two things won me over less: on top speed, the noise gets genuinely tiring over time, I consistently switched back to speed 2 in the evening. The touchscreen makes controls pleasant to use, no fiddly buttons, and the automatic horizontal oscillation spreads the air well around the room instead of blowing in a single direction. The dual filter, anti-dust plus honeycomb pad, gives a noticeably cleaner feel to the air in use, a real plus compared with a basic mist fan. The 7-litre tank, fillable from the top or the bottom depending on available space, proved handy day to day. The 10-metre range Argo advertises turns out to mean the throw distance of the airflow, not a uniform cooling radius across the whole room, a distinction worth understanding before buying. The two ice packs included let you boost the effect during the hottest peaks, a real plus on the warmest days. The 6-litre tank with a drawer-style opening makes filling and cleaning easy, a simple but well-thought-out detail. What struck me most, less positively: at 12.6 kg it's by far the heaviest of the bunch, and even with the 360° wheels, moving it between rooms takes a bit of effort. Noise stays reasonable (57 dB(A) at maximum), a solid choice for anyone who prioritises airflow power over lightness.
