No. With no compressor or refrigerant gas, it cools the air through evaporation for individual use close to the unit (desk, bedside, sofa), not an entire room the way a real portable or fixed air conditioner would.
The name is misleading: many buyers expect real air conditioning. Technically, evaporative cooling is capped at a few degrees of difference and loses effectiveness above 60% ambient humidity, which explains the frequent disappointment, regardless of brand.
Generally 6 to 27 hours depending on tank capacity (500 to 900ml on this format) and the speed chosen. Models with a built-in battery also run cordless, typically 5 to 10 hours depending on charge.
Less well: like any evaporative technology, its effectiveness drops noticeably above 60% relative humidity. Worth knowing before buying, especially in a maritime climate or during humid summer spells.
A USB model is usually cheaper and can run continuously as long as it stays plugged in. A model with a built-in battery often costs more but allows fully cordless use, handy when camping or with no socket nearby.
