Premium models generally claim 24 hours or more for cold, versus 12 hours or more for hot in the same bottle, cold almost always lasting longer due to the laws of physics. These figures vary with ambient temperature and how often the lid is opened.
Allow 350 to 500ml for light everyday use (office, short commute), 700ml to 1 litre for sport or a full day without a refill, and beyond for intensive use or sharing between several people.
Thanks to its vacuum-insulated double wall, the bottle's outer surface stays at room temperature even when the contents are ice cold, unlike a classic plastic or glass bottle whose surface cools directly on contact with the liquid.
A classic screw lid stays the most leakproof and easiest to maintain. A flip or straw lid makes handling easier during a sporting activity, at the cost of sometimes slightly reduced leakproofing if knocked or with the bottle lying flat in a bag.
On a quality stainless steel model, flavour transfer generally stays limited if the bottle is well rinsed between different uses (coffee then water, for instance). Rinsing with hot water and drying fully limits this, more noticeable on entry-level models.
