The EcoFlow WAVE 2 is a reversible portable air conditioner designed to remove the usual installation hassles: thanks to its design, no drainage is needed in cooling mode as long as humidity stays below 70%, compared with the often more demanding condensate management of conventional portable air conditioners. Rated by the manufacturer at 1,500W (5,100 BTU/h) cooling and about 1,780W (6,100 BTU/h) heating, it targets small spaces: a tent, motorhome, van, or a room with no air conditioning.
Like its successor the WAVE 3, it can run on a swappable battery (1,159Wh, sold separately), for a claimed runtime of 8 hours in Eco mode and 2 to 3 hours at full power. Recharging happens via mains, solar, car, or a portable power station, and the unit is controlled through the EcoFlow app.
The R290 refrigerant (130g) equips the unit, whose weight of about 14.5 kg and dimensions of 51.8 x 29.7 x 33.6 cm sit within the average for compact portable air conditioners. I took it away for a weekend in a camper van, well out of reach of any mains socket, to see if the promise of genuinely unpluggable cooling held up. With the add-on battery fitted, the unit ran for over 6 hours in Eco mode before asking for a recharge, close to the manufacturer's figure. Fast cooling isn't just marketing talk: set up in the van on a hot afternoon, the temperature dropped noticeably within minutes once the exhaust hose was fitted into the roof vent. Having no drainage to deal with at all, as long as humidity stays reasonable, genuinely simplifies life on the road. What impressed me less: the unit is still heavy and bulky for truly everyday nomadic use, nowhere near something you'd shift with one hand, and at full power the noise becomes noticeably more present than on mains-powered models.
