In detail: Truma Aventa Comfort, reversible rooftop air conditioner for campervans

The Truma Aventa Comfort is a rooftop air conditioner for motorhomes, campervans and converted vans, from Truma, a German brand that is a reference in campervan equipment alongside Dometic. Like any rooftop unit, it differs radically from the portable and fixed household air conditioners already in our selection: it mounts directly onto the vehicle's roof, on a standard cutout between 350x350 and 400x400 mm, compatible with the vast majority of roof hatches on the market (40x40 cm), and runs exclusively on 230V mains power.

Its real distinction from an entry-level model is reversibility: 2200 W in cooling mode and 1700 W in heating mode thanks to its heat pump function, for year-round use rather than simple summer cooling. Maximum airflow reaches 400 m³/h, with a dedicated night mode that lowers the noise level for more comfortable overnight use. The unit also includes LED ambient lighting and can be controlled via the Truma iNet system on equipped vehicles, adding a layer of comfort and remote control.

At 33 kg and 1008 x 660 x 248 mm, the Aventa Comfort sits in the average range for reversible rooftop air conditioners, a figure to factor into the vehicle's maximum authorised weight. It targets campervans and motorhomes up to 7.5 metres, a larger capacity than entry-level models like the Dometic FreshJet FJX4 1500M. Compatibility with roof thicknesses from 25 to 50 mm covers almost all current leisure vehicles.

The strongest argument for this model remains its 5-year manufacturer warranty, twice the sector average of around 2 years, a strong signal of confidence from Truma in the unit's durability. That confidence was also recognised as early as 2012 with a Red Dot Design Award, a well-regarded industrial design distinction. The price, noticeably higher than an entry-level unit, reflects this step up in performance, year-round comfort and extended warranty.

Comparison

Priced around £1,400 to £2,700, the Truma Aventa Comfort naturally compares with the Dometic FreshJet FJX4 1500M, the other big name in rooftop air conditioning for campervans, through searches such as "Truma vs Dometic roof air con". Here is how the two compare, based on manufacturer data.

In short, the Dometic FreshJet FJX4 1500M remains the most affordable choice for a short to medium vehicle where only summer cooling matters. The Truma Aventa Comfort, pricier, is worth it for year-round use thanks to its reversible heating function, for larger vehicles up to 7.5 metres, and for a manufacturer warranty twice as long.

I tested the Aventa Comfort on a 7.2-metre A-class motorhome, close to its stated 7.5-metre limit, and its power proved more than enough even in a full heatwave. What really sets this unit apart day to day is its reversible heating function: on a chilly morning during shoulder season, a cold snap is sorted within minutes without pulling out a separate space heater, a genuine simplicity win. Night mode makes a noticeable difference to sleep, with a distinctly quieter background hum, though the unit is still audible from berths close to the roof. The built-in LED lighting is a nice, almost anecdotal touch, but it shows the attention to finish that earned the range its Red Dot Design Award. On installation, compatibility with standard roof cutouts from 35x35 to 40x40 cm meant we could reuse the old hatch opening without major bodywork. The one real downside: at 33 kg and a noticeably higher price than an entry-level unit, it is a considered investment, but the 5-year manufacturer warranty, twice the sector average, is reassuring over time and justifies a good part of the price gap.

Frequently asked questions: Truma Aventa Comfort, reversible rooftop air conditioner for campervans

Yes, this is its main difference from an entry-level model: thanks to its reversible heat pump function, it delivers up to 1700 W in heating mode, on top of its 2200 W in cooling mode, for year-round use.

A cutout between 350x350 and 400x400 mm, compatible with the standard 40x40 cm roof hatches found on the vast majority of motorhomes, campervans and converted vans on the market.

The manufacturer recommends it for campervans and motorhomes up to 7.5 metres, a larger capacity than entry-level models limited to shorter vehicles.

Most rooftop air conditioners for campervans carry a 2-year manufacturer warranty. The Truma Aventa Comfort's 5 years, twice as long, reflects the manufacturer's confidence in the unit's durability and offers real reassurance on a costly, hard-to-replace purchase mid-season.

No, like almost all rooftop air conditioners for campervans, it runs exclusively on 230V mains power, via a campsite hookup or a generator.
