Meaco DD8L Pro

Made by Meaco, the British brand best known for air treatment, the DD8L Pro is a desiccant dehumidifier built for one very specific job: cold, unheated rooms. Cellars, garages, conservatories, a second home shut up over winter or a boat left at its mooring are exactly the places where most compressor dehumidifiers lose the bulk of their efficiency once the temperature drops below 10 to 15°C.

The desiccant principle relies on a rotor coated in absorbent material that captures moisture from the air before releasing it, warmed, into a closed loop: this is what lets the DD8L Pro keep extracting water down to 1°C, across an operating range of 1°C to 35°C (34°F to 95°F). Across three speeds, it extracts from 2.12 litres a day on the lowest setting up to 7.97 litres a day on the highest (measured at 20°C and 60% relative humidity), with power draw ranging from 231 to 623 W and noise from 40 to 50 dB.

Laundry Mode combines heat, boosted airflow (175 m³/h) and an automatic louvre to speed up drying clothes indoors, a cheaper alternative to a tumble dryer on rainy days or in winter. Smart Energy mode automatically adjusts power to the measured humidity level, cutting consumption once the air is already fairly dry. A built-in anti-bacterial ioniser rounds things out, neutralising some of the bacteria, mould spores and allergens in the air.

The DD8L Pro can also be controlled remotely: once connected over Wi-Fi, the Meaco app lets you track humidity, switch modes or adjust settings from a phone, with compatibility for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The redesigned Chase Display swaps confusing error codes for clear instructions, and a built-in cable tidy lets the unit sit flush against a wall with no trailing lead.

Its main limitation is the tank, a fairly modest 2 litres, which means more frequent emptying than the 4 to 6 litre tanks found on large compressor dehumidifiers, unless you set up continuous drainage (hose not included). The price is also on the high side for a maximum extraction rate of 8 litres a day, a trade-off Meaco has made deliberately in favour of cold-weather performance rather than sheer volume.

In the end, the Meaco DD8L Pro suits anyone who needs to dry out a cold, unheated room in winter, exactly where a standard compressor dehumidifier shows its limits. For a room that is heated year-round, a larger-capacity compressor model is often still the more sensible choice per litre extracted. It comes with a 3-year manufacturer warranty.
