In detail: Boneco U200

The Boneco U200 is an ultrasonic humidifier from Boneco, the Swiss manufacturer that has specialised in home air treatment since 1956. It targets medium to large rooms, up to around 50 m² (bedroom, living room, home office), a segment where genuinely premium units built to last several seasons remain rare.

Its ultrasonic technology turns tank water into a micro-fine mist using a high-frequency membrane, then disperses it into the room through a small built-in fan, without ever heating the water. The 3.5 litre tank is removable for easy refilling at the tap, and delivers a humidity output of up to 340 g/h, adjusted steplessly via a simple rotary dial on the base of the unit.

The U200's main advantage over many entry-level ultrasonic humidifiers lies in its water treatment: an antibacterial Ionic Silver Stick, permanently submerged in the tank, uses silver's natural antibacterial effect to limit microbial growth, while the A250 AQUA PRO demineralisation filter traps a share of the limescale responsible for the fine white dust that can settle on furniture around a poorly maintained ultrasonic humidifier.

On the comfort side, the unit stays genuinely quiet, around 30 dB(A) at moderate output, making it suitable for overnight use in a bedroom. A subtle blue light, switchable off, illuminates the tank for a bit of ambience, and a small dedicated container lets you add a few drops of essential oil to the mist. An indicator light and auto shut-off prevent the unit from running dry once the tank empties.

Its limitations are typical of its tier: no digital display or automatic hygrostat to target a precise humidity level, so you adjust power by ear or with a separate hygrometer, and the A250 AQUA PRO filter remains a consumable that needs periodic replacement to keep its limescale protection effective. Still, it is a simple, sturdy, well-thought-out unit, a Red Dot Design Award winner, that brings Boneco's Swiss build quality to a standard bedroom or living room without the electronic complexity, or the price tag, of the brand's connected flagship models such as the U350 or the U700 SMART.

Comparison

Around £90 to £110, the Boneco U200 regularly comes up against the Levoit Classic 300S and the Beurer LB 88 in searches like "Boneco U200 vs Levoit" or "best humidifier for living room". Here is how the three compare, based on each manufacturer's published specifications.

The Levoit Classic 300S offers a bigger tank and automatic app-based control, at the cost of less thorough limescale treatment. The Beurer LB 88 offers optional warm mist but is noticeably noisier. The Boneco U200 bets on simplicity and more complete water treatment, ionic silver plus a dedicated filter, for hassle-free use in a bedroom or living room.

Our tester's verdict: Christophe Delpuech

I ran the U200 in a living room of about 35 m² for several weeks in the depths of winter, with underfloor heating on continuously. First thing I noticed: the rotary dial on the back does all the work, no screen, no fiddly settings, just turn it until you feel the mist pick up. On medium power, the 3.5 litre tank comfortably lasts a full night without running dry, and the noise stays unobtrusive, more of a soft fan whir than an annoying hiss. I liked the blue tank light, genuinely switchable off if you would rather not sleep with a night light. Two drawbacks stood out after weeks of use: without a separate hygrometer, it is hard to know exactly where the room's real humidity level sits, and the A250 AQUA PRO filter needs replacing fairly often to keep the water properly treated, a recurring cost worth budgeting for. For a standard bedroom or living room in winter, the U200 still stands out as one of the more dependable ultrasonic humidifiers I have tested at this price point.

Frequently asked questions: Boneco U200

Boneco recommends the U200 for a coverage of up to 50 m² (125 m³), which covers a living room or a large bedroom. Beyond that, a higher-output model such as the U350 or the U700 from the same brand is a better fit.

Yes, the 3.5 litre tank is removable and opens wide for cleaning with the supplied brush. The antibacterial Ionic Silver Stick also limits bacterial growth between cleanings.

That residue comes from limescale in hard tap water, sprayed out along with the mist. The U200's A250 AQUA PRO demineralisation filter reduces this, but very hard water or a worn-out filter can still leave a faint white film on nearby furniture.

No, the U200 is set manually via a rotary power dial, with no built-in humidity sensor. For automatic control of a target humidity level, look at a higher model in the Boneco range, such as the U350 or the U700 SMART.

At full output, up to 340 g/h, the 3.5 litre tank lasts a little over 10 hours. At reduced power for overnight use, it comfortably covers a full night.
