In detail: Engel SB30F, 30-litre drawer fridge-freezer, 12/24V DC only
The Engel SB30F, manufacturer reference SB30F-N-W, takes a radically different shape from the Austrian brand's usual portable coolers: it is a 30-litre drawer, designed to be built in horizontally into a cabinet, worktop or bulkhead in a van, boat or motorhome. The compressor unit, an Engel oscillating model known for being unaffected by vibration and tilting, can be relocated up to 1.5 metres away from the drawer itself, letting it be tucked into a locker or under a technical floor while only a discreet front panel remains visible.
Its temperature range, continuously adjustable from +10°C to -8°C, is narrower than the classic MT45F or MR-040F coolers in the range, but stays consistent with its main purpose: an everyday fridge capable of dropping below 0°C for frozen goods, without aiming for the -18°C of dedicated freezers. Power supply is strictly 12V or 24V DC, designed for a direct connection to the vehicle or boat battery: unlike other Engel models, there is no built-in 230V socket, worth planning for if you need to run it at a hook-up or at home.
Power draw stays low, around 32W on average (roughly 460 Wh per day at 30°C ambient), for a weight of 19 kg. The painted steel body and stainless steel runners are built for a fixed, long-lasting installation, with a low-consumption interior LED light and a stated capacity of up to 35 x 330 ml cans. Two fans handle heat exchange for the compressor unit while running.
Its limits mostly come down to its purpose: this is not a portable unit to pull out of the boot at every stop, but a built-in solution that requires a bit of installation work (cutting the cabinet, fixing, wiring the relocated unit). Once in place, it benefits from the Engel oscillating compressor's reputation for mechanical reliability and a 3-year manufacturer warranty, at a price that sits toward the upper end of custom onboard refrigeration solutions.

Our tester's verdict: Gilles Caron
I had it installed horizontally in the lower cabinet of a van conversion, replacing a standard storage drawer, with the compressor unit relocated behind the bulkhead so only the front panel stays visible. That is where the SB30F really makes sense: once built in, you completely forget there is a compressor on board, no perceptible vibration on the worktop, and the space above it remains usable like any other drawer. The +10°C to -8°C range is narrower than on the brand's classic coolers, but more than enough for everyday fridge use with a colder zone for weekend frozen goods. The stainless steel runners slide effortlessly even loaded, and the interior LED light is a genuinely useful touch late at night. Two things worth planning ahead of the purchase: there is no built-in 230V socket, so you need an external converter if you plan to run it from mains power, and the flush-mounted install takes a bit more work (cutting, fixing, wiring the relocated unit) than simply placing a cooler down. For a build planned around this format from the start, it is an elegant, long-lasting solution.
Frequently asked questions: Engel SB30F, 30-litre drawer fridge-freezer, 12/24V DC only
No, the Engel SB30F runs exclusively on 12V or 24V DC, with no built-in 230V socket. For use at a hook-up or at home, you need an external 230V-to-12V converter.
Yes, that is one of its main strengths: the oscillating compressor unit can be relocated up to 1.5 metres from the drawer, letting it be tucked into a locker or technical space while only a discreet front panel remains visible.
The SB30F is a built-in drawer model, installed horizontally into a cabinet, while the MT45F and MR-040F are portable coolers you simply set down. The SB30F also has a narrower cold range (+10°C to -8°C versus -18°C for the other two) and runs only on 12/24V DC, with no 230V.
The manufacturer states a 30-litre capacity, or up to around 35 x 330 ml cans, a volume suited to everyday fridge use in a mid-size van, boat or motorhome.
It is sold directly through Engel's official online store, which ships internationally and lists the full spec sheet for the SB30F-N-W model along with compatible mounting kits.
