Engel MT27F

The Engel MT27F, model reference MT27F-G3-D, holds a strategic place in the Austrian manufacturer's compression cooler range, a brand renowned for over half a century for the longevity of its compressors in the 4x4, camper van and boating world. With a 21-litre capacity and 17 kg empty, it sits just above the MT17F (15 litres, 16 kg), the most compact model in the triple-voltage range, while staying noticeably lighter and more affordable than bigger digital models such as the MT45F (40 litres, 24 kg).

Its temperature range, continuously adjustable from +10°C to -18°C, lets it work as either a cool box or a small backup freezer, with room for around fifteen standing 0.5-litre bottles, a real plus for a family of three or two couples over a few days. Power supply is universal: 12V and 24V for a direct connection to the vehicle's battery, and 230V with automatic voltage switching for use at home or on a powered site.

The Engel swing motor compressor, unaffected by vibration, shocks or tilting, draws only 32W and, according to an independent measured test, runs at around 40 dB, one of the quietest in its class of small compressor coolers. This low power draw makes it a sound choice for running off a solar panel or a modest auxiliary battery, with no extra consumption even at high outside temperatures.

Its two built-in handles make it easy to carry with one or two hands over short distances, an advantage over the bigger, heavier models in the range. It does make do with a classic dial thermostat though, rather than the MT45F's digital LCD screen, which is less precise for dialling in an exact temperature. But for anyone after a mid-size format between the compact MT17F and the capacity of the digital models, backed by Engel's long-standing mechanical reliability, the MT27F remains a well-balanced choice, sold through an authorised Engel reseller.
