Engel MD14F

The Engel MD14F, model reference SAWMD14F and nicknamed "Little Engel" by the manufacturer, is the smallest and lightest compressor cooler in the Engel range, the Austrian brand renowned for over half a century for the reliability of its compressors in the 4x4, camper van and boating world. With a 14-litre usable capacity and only 11.5 kg empty, it slots onto the floor or passenger seat of practically any vehicle, unlike bigger models in the range such as the MT17F or the MT45F, which target extended use in a van or a boat.

Its temperature range, continuously adjustable from +10°C to -18°C, lets it work as either a cool box or a small backup freezer. The manufacturer even recommends it for transporting medication and vaccines, thanks to a limited temperature swing between the compressor's on and off cycles, an argument that also appeals to travelling healthcare professionals. A small hatch built into the main lid gives quick access to the contents without opening the whole cooler, handy for grabbing a drink without disturbing the rest of the load.

Unlike the MT17F, which runs on 12V, 24V and 230V with automatic switching, the MD14F is limited to 12V DC: no mains socket, no 24V for heavy trucks. This technical choice partly explains its lower price and reduced weight. The Engel swing motor compressor, unaffected by vibration, shocks or tilting, draws only 32W and runs with no extra consumption even in high outside heat, a real plus for running off a solar panel or a small auxiliary battery.

Its limits come down to its size and its 12V-only power supply: it is not suited to home use without a converter, nor to a group or several days of food supplies for more than one or two people. It also makes do with a simple dial thermostat, with no digital display. But for anyone after the lightest, most affordable Engel compressor cooler, backed by the brand's long-standing mechanical reliability, the MD14F remains a solid choice for light nomadic use.
