In detail: Igloo Marine Ultra 54, large-capacity rigid cooler 51 litres
Igloo, a historic American cooler brand, extends its Marine range with the Ultra 54, a large-capacity model built for demanding nautical use: sea spray, humidity and prolonged sun exposure on a boat deck.
Its stainless steel hardware, specifically treated against rust, sets this model apart from classic land-based coolers, where a standard metal hinge or handle would eventually corrode after a few trips at sea. UV protection on the plastic also limits premature ageing from repeated sun exposure.
With 51 litres of capacity, around 78 cans, this cooler targets long trips at sea, motorhome weekends or large gatherings rather than light individual use. The lid includes cup holders and a graduated ruler, a handy detail for measuring a fresh catch without reaching for an extra tool.
The Igloo Marine Ultra 54 suits anyone after a large, robust cooler for extended nautical or family use, keeping in mind that the manufacturer's claimed cold retention runs optimistic compared to real-world use in strong heat.

Our tester's verdict: Gilles Caron
Tested on several boat trips and a motorhome weekend, this large Igloo quickly proved its worth for a group: the 51 litres easily swallow drinks and food for six or seven people. The stainless hardware showed no sign of rust despite repeated exposure to sea spray, a real plus for regular nautical use. On the other hand, the claimed 5-day cold retention didn't hold up in our conditions: past 24 hours in strong ambient heat inside a van parked in the sun, a standard ice block had already largely melted, a performance closer to an entry-level cooler than what the product sheet suggests. The empty weight of 3.7 kg stays reasonable for the volume, but the bulk once full means planning for space in the boot or on deck. For family or group use with regular access to fresh ice, this format remains worthwhile, provided you scale back expectations on real-world retention compared to the stated figures.
Frequently asked questions: Igloo Marine Ultra 54, large-capacity rigid cooler 51 litres
Yes, that's precisely its purpose: the stainless steel hardware is treated against rust to withstand sea spray and humidity, unlike a classic land-based cooler.
The manufacturer claims this duration under optimal conditions, but in real use during strong heat, actual retention is noticeably lower, closer to 24 to 48 hours depending on sun exposure.
With 51 litres, around 78 cans, it suits a group of six to eight people for a day out or a weekend, rather than individual use.
