In detail: Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact, HEPA and activated carbon filter
With the Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact, Xiaomi delivers the most accessible entry point into its family of connected air purifiers, without cutting corners on the essentials: a genuine high-efficiency filter, a full-featured app and a shape that fits almost anywhere, from a child's bedroom to a home office. Its white cylindrical body, 35.5 cm tall with a 22 cm diameter, weighs barely 2.2 kg and sits comfortably on the floor, a bedside table or a console.
At its core, a 3-in-1 filter combines a pre-filter, an electrostatically charged high-efficiency filter and a layer of activated carbon: together they capture 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns, up to 99.99% for particles as small as 0.1 microns, whether pollen, dust, pet dander, smoke or cooking odours. TÜV Rheinland Allergy Care certification backs up its real-world effectiveness against allergens, a genuine selling point for households dealing with hay fever or dust mites.
On performance, purified air flow reaches 230 m³/h (particle CADR), for an effectively treated area of 16 to 27 m², and up to 48 m² for light air upkeep. Auto mode relies on a particle sensor that adjusts fan speed on its own, with instant visual feedback through a four-colour light. In sleep mode, noise drops to just 20 dB, barely more than a whisper, while maximum speed tops out at 60 dB(A). Power draw stays modest too: 27 W at most, around 0.7 kWh for 24 hours of continuous purification.
Control runs through the Xiaomi Home app, with timer, child lock and real-time air quality tracking, or by voice via Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. Replacing the filter, recommended every 6 to 12 months, takes a single motion: twist the base to pull out the cartridge. Its main limitation lies in its compact size: beyond 25 to 30 m², a more powerful model is a better fit, or it should be left running continuously. For a room of reasonable size, the Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact remains one of the strongest value propositions on the market.

Comparison
In the £70 to £130 range, the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact regularly comes up against the Levoit Core 300S and the Philips Series 600i AC0650/10, two other compact purifiers widely searched for a bedroom or small living room, in comparisons like "Xiaomi Air Purifier 4 Compact vs Levoit Core 300S". Here is how the three compare, based on each manufacturer's published specifications (for guidance only).
| Criterion | Xiaomi 4 Compact | Levoit Core 300S | Philips Series 600i AC0650/10 |

| Typical price | ≈£70 | ≈£150 | ≈£100 |
The Levoit Core 300S offers a slightly higher air flow and a genuine real-time air quality sensor, but at a noticeably higher price. The Philips Series 600i covers a larger area and stays very quiet, without matching the Xiaomi's CADR or offering a dedicated activated carbon layer for odours. Under £75, the Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact remains one of the best air-flow-to-price ratios in the segment, with TÜV Rheinland Allergy Care certification as a bonus.

Our tester's verdict: Christophe Delpuech
I ran the Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact in a 14 m² bedroom, and it faded into the background from the first night: in auto mode it stays close to inaudible and adjusts its own fan speed based on the measured air quality, shown at a glance through the 4-colour light on top. What surprised me most was how quickly it reacts: a few minutes after striking a match right in front of the intake, the light dropped back from red to green. Changing the filter, recommended every 6 to 12 months, is genuinely simple: twist the base and pull out the whole cartridge, no loose foam or carbon to handle. Two honest gripes: the power button stays faintly lit even in night mode, a small piece of tape sorts that out, and in a room of 25 m² or more, it is better run continuously than relied on for short bursts. For a bedroom, home office or small living space, this is a serious little machine, easy to live with day to day and light on the electricity bill.
Frequently asked questions: Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact, HEPA and activated carbon filter
The manufacturer states an effectively treated area of 16 to 27 m² for optimal air renewal, and up to 48 m² for light upkeep with a gentler air renewal rate. For a standard bedroom or home office, it is well sized.
No: in sleep mode it drops to 20 dB, barely audible, comparable to rustling leaves. At maximum speed it can reach up to 60 dB(A), a setting best kept for occasional bursts rather than continuous use.
Xiaomi recommends replacing the 3-in-1 filter every 6 to 12 months depending on use and ambient air quality. The Xiaomi Home app shows a wear indicator and warns when a replacement is needed.
Yes, the touch controls on the unit let you change mode or speed without a smartphone. The app adds remote control, timer, child lock and detailed air quality tracking.
Yes, thanks to its activated carbon layer built into the 3-in-1 filter, alongside the high-efficiency filter that captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. Cooking or smoke odours are noticeably reduced, alongside dust and pollen.
